Slideshows and presentations can enhance the visual quality of any video. Its common to show slides when explaining a concept, method or principle that is hard to visualise. Its also common when providing others with tips, or a list of actions. This post descibes how to add slides to video in Shotcut, so you can maximise user retention.

Add Slides to Video in Shotcut

The first step in adding slides, is creating the slides. You need to create them in your favourite presentation software. This could be in something like PowerPoint if you have Microsoft 365. If you are looking for a free alternative, then Canva is a great place to start. As you create your slides, recognise that each transition needs to be its own image. So, if you have three Shotcut tips on a single slide to reveal one after the other, that’s 3 images.

When you have the images, you can add them into Shotcut. If you need any help doing this, I have a full guide on adding images in Shotcut.

Now that you have the images in Shotcut, you should add a new track. Add them to the new track in the correct place. You can also overlap them to make transitions and re-create effects similar to the presentation transitions you are used to.

When you have completed your slideshow in Shotcut, the results will speak for themselves. It will appear professional and you have more flexibility to modify them.

Whilst screen recording is a perfectly good way to add slides, it is much more restricted. For example, when you perform transitions you need to know the exact length of time. This may not be possible prior to the video being created. You also often get the mouse zipping across the screen as you are presenting, which can be distracting for viewers.
